Snow days have been the norm here in northern Nevada recently, and you may be dreaming of warm spring and summer days you can enjoy in your backyard. If a patio cover or pergola would make your outdoor space that much better, we love the idea! Of course, there are lots of considerations for this kind of project, starting with material. What’s the best material for a patio cover in northern Nevada?

Wood Patio Covers

Wood is a traditional material for patio covers and pergolas, and it does have a certain appeal for a classic aesthetic. On the downside is the maintenance factor and the hefty price tag both initially and over time. Especially here in northern Nevada, you’ll need to sand and repaint a wooden patio cover every year, and they’re still subject to issues like warping, rotting, and peeling. That means lifespan may be an issue over time.

Aluminum Patio Covers

Aluminum patio covers have come a long way. They’re incredibly strong and light weight, with no issues relating to rotting, cracking, or warping. Plus, maintenance is minimal. There are a wide range of colors to complement different homes, and they’re surprisingly versatile. Of course, even aluminum isn’t perfect. Some homeowners find they can be a little noisy in the rain.

Vinyl Patio Covers

This material is lower maintenance than wood and it can be more durable. But aesthetics can be a concern, and fading can be an issue. What’s more, color ranges are a little limited and vinyl can’t be painted.

Which Material is Best for a Patio Cover?

Here at Golden Eagle Builders in Reno, we’ve worked on many patio cover and pergola projects. There’s a lot to be said for using wood or aluminum over vinyl. And because our preference is for patio covers that are durable, long-lasting, weather-resistant, and beautiful, aluminum is the best choice.
